Vaude is not the first brand you think of when making sleep mats. Not so crazy because it is a market dominated by two brands: Exped and especially Thermarest. But Vaude would not be vaude if they did not think: we can do that, we can do better, and above all, we can be more environmentally aware. And so early this spring the Vaude Performance 7 was born and I have been able to test it for several months.
The Vaude Performance 7 – as the name suggests – is part of a whole series of sleeping mats. The Vaude Performance series includes four mats: the ordinary performance and the Winter performance. Both types are for sale in one M of Medium and one L of Large. I test here the Vaude Performance 7 M.
Sizes and weights
The Vaude Performance 7 in size M weighs on my precision scale in the cover 460.1 grams (specified 450 grams) and has a pakmaat of 9 cm X 20 cm. That is in its class pretty light and small. Bloated you have a sleeping surface of 51 cm wide and 183 cm long. For completeness: The L weighs 520 grams, is 59 cm wide and 196 cm long.
Insulation value
The M and L Vaude Performance 7 have a thickness of 7 cm and an insulation value of R 2.7. This R value indicates that the Vaude Performance 7 is suitable for three seasons with a lower limit temperature of-3.5 degrees. The winter variant is also 7 cm thick and has an R-value of 4.6 and goes to-15.3 degrees. More about this below.
Materials
The top and bottom of the Vaude Performance 7 are made of 20 denier * polyester with a polyurethane coating on the inside to make the material airtight (and waterproof;-)). The sleeping mat is filled with 60 g/m2 Prima loft Black insulation Eco which is made of fully recycled polyester. Vaude consciously chooses a recycled polyester because Vaude does not use a down as an isolator in the collection. The Prima loft Black insulation sits at the top of the mat, which causes body heat to be retained and reflected back while the cold is blocked at the bottom. The Wintermat is also filled with 200 grams of prima loft per m2.
Vaude Performance 7 Blow Up
Rolling out the Vaude Performance 7 goes without saying. Flat on the ground you have a long flat pancake with a rounded head and tail. At one of the ends the sleeping mat has a large valve. Blowing up with your mouth can, but is not recommended. Because this is not a selfinflatable mattress, you need a lot of air to blow it up. It is better to use a special Blaaszak for this. And there goes a bit of fog in the Vaude.
Blaaszak
This Blaaszak is not standard with the mat. Also on the packaging and on the website of Vaude There is nowhere that you actually need this bag. And no: The drybag in which he is delivered is not. Watch the movie on the website and there you see exactly what I mean. Now it is coincidence that I am testing a sleeping mat of Exped that works very similar and which I have a pompzak. The valve of the Vaude Performance 7 has the same size so that works. And then it blows up very easily. Create air with the bag, pinch bag and squeeze the air into the mat. With a bag or four you have the Vaude full. Valve close and sleep though.
The loose Pump Sack of vaude costs €30.00 and weighs 80 grams. So you really have to add to the Vaude Performance 7. This bag is also a watertight pocket.
Does PE sleep nicely?
Yes! Full of conviction. The mat is very stable and from the runways you really do not notice anything. These jobs also make sure that you position less quickly from the mat. Now I’m kinda agile in my sleep and there are mats that crack terribly. If not the Vaude Performance 7. During the past few months I have not really had the temperatures that the mat is made for, so whether it is really warm enough… let’s prove the R-value of the vaude to the contrary but accept it. Is the mat solid? Yes, wear is not a question and I have not had a hole. If this happens, a sticky set is delivered to the mat.
Pack
If you’ve slept the night and it’s time to pack it again, you also want the mat to wrap up quickly. That’s fine here. Thanks to a special tab that is attached to the valve and can be pushed into the opening, it remains open and the mat is quickly emptied. Then roll up, stop in his good drybag and you can continue.
Conclusion
The Vaude Performance 7 is a delightfully light, thick and comfortable sleeping mat. His packing volume is super. Especially after you have seen the mat blown up. With the Pump Sack the mat is also very user friendly. With the mouth blowing up? I wouldn’t do it. Then prefer a selfinflatable. The price of the Vaude Performance 7 is €140 and you have to add €30 for the Pump Sack. And that’s a bit of a dissonant in this positive story, because then the Vaude Performance 7 suddenly becomes a lot more expensive than its similar competitors: 8.2 out of 10 point.
* Denier indicates the thickness of the tissue. 20 denier is thin.
