Weight and size
The Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L is a sleeping pad that has been designed with comfort in top of mind. And in this case I mean comfort for everyone not being a backpacker, hiker or cyclist. It is comfort for those who travel by boat, kayak, canoe, car, caravan, motorcycle and camper. And also for use as an emergency guest bed at home for the occasional sleepover. Why? Well the Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L has a packsize of 24 x 39 cm and that is larger then any sleeping pad I have ever tested. And with the huge size comes a rather heavy weight too: 1922,40 grams on my precise scale. So… not for backpacking.
Inflating
The process of inflating the Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L is a simple one. Unpack the sleeping pad, roll it out and use the pumpsack (80 grams) to inflate it. I have tested Vaude sleeping pads before and I had to use my Exped pumpsack because a pumpsack was – and still is – not included. That is bit of a pity but later more on that matter. The pumpsacks nozzle goes onto to the valve of the Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L and all I have to do is fill the pumpsack with air and move it in to the sleeping pad. The pumpsack has a volume of 30 liter and it takes 3.5 – 5 times pumping to fill the sleeping pad. Since the valve is in principle a one-way valve, I can take out the nozzle without risk (or when full it pops out by its selves), put the cap on the valve and I am sorted. When inflated the Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L has a size of 198 x 68 cm and is 10 centimeters thick.
Construction
The construction of the Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L is very straightforward. It has an ‘inner’ sleeping pad and a comfortable liner around it. The inner looks like an oldfashioned pad that I used when I was camping with mum and dad… and that I often used to play with in streams and lakes. The inner has tubes from polyurethane that – to be honest – look a bit cheap and come very close to the pads used by mom and dad. The Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L has an R-value of 2 rating it for mostly late spring, early autumn and summer conditions (2 Degrees Celsius/35,6 Degrees Fahrenheit). The liner protects the inner and on top there is a tick layer of foam. This makes all the difference with the other camping sleeping pads I know. The good thing is that I can remove the liner thanks to a zipper and wash it at 30 degrees when needed.
Sleeping comfort
On the television I sometimes come across those advertisements of inflatable guest kings-and-queens beds with electric pumps for easy usage. Always a beautiful lady explaining about the superior sleeping comfort and that you will never have a pain in the back ever again. ‘And if it is good for you, it is also good for your guests’. Well… I am not that beautiful lady… but I get the idea. The Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L sleeps like… a dream. The foam top layer cushioning is soft and prevents that I feel the beams underneath it. The material of the fabric is cuddly. The sleeping pad – or should I say mattress by now – is stable and makes no noise when turning around to the other side. I have been testing it, my family has been testing it and during the 5 weeks we used it, it was a battle who was to sleep on it. That is a good sign. I mentioned the ‘cheap’ looking polyurethane beams but they have proven to be sturdy; we didn’t need the provided repair kit to fix a puncture.
Deflating and packing
To deflate and pack this Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L all I need to do is remove the valve cover and stick the ‘pointy’ part on the cover in to the valve. Air will release fast and easy. Laying on the sleeping pad makes the process go faster. Getting it back into the stuffbag is a matter of folding it lengthwise and roll it. Due to the foam it takes some strength. When done an elastic band is provided to prevent it from unfolding again. The stuffbag is just a very simple one; no compression straps here.
Pumpsack
As I mentioned before I would get back to the pumpsack. The pumsack is not included in the package of the Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L. I do understand this since I tested the Vaude Performance 7 a while ago. It would be illogical to buy a pumpsack with every sleeping pad you buy. So be aware of this when you buy the first one. As mentioned above: the Exped pumpsacks fit on the Vaude’s as well. So if you have that one…. You get the idea. The Vaude pumpsack is a good peace of kit. It is large, strong and off course airtight so waterproof. This means it doubles as a waterproof bag. The price of the pumpsack is € 30,-. It would be nice if Vaude made a special offer on combination. It would make my decision in buying one a bit easier.
The verdict
The Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L is a very comfortable sleeping pad. It is one of the best that I have ever slept on. But I should state that I am a reviewer on mostly lightweight and packable camping gear. The Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L is everything but that and I don’t have too much experience with other sleeping pads in this area. There is a lot to like about the Vaude Dream Comfort 10 L and I can’t find any downsides on the concept, construction and build quality. I would like to see a package deal with a pad and pumpsack in one just to make the purchase a bit friendlier. The price of € 170,00 for the sleeping pad and € 30,00 for the pumpsack is a bit cheaper than the competition.
