The Scarpa Mojito Hike GTX is an A/B hiking shoe with a medium-high shank. It is suitable for multi-day trips in the middle mountains with a not too heavy backpack. Read the review.
Fit
The fit of the Scarpa Mojito Hike GTX is suitable for narrow to normal feet. The Scarpa Mojito Hike GTX WMN is the ladies version that comes closest to the Mojito and is built on a ladies last.
Construction
The upper of the Scarpa Mojito Hike GTX consists for the most part of soft 1.8 mm thick water-repellent suede leather. A Gore-Tex membrane makes the shoes waterproof and breathable. The Mojito has inserts made of synthetic material. They are located where extra flexibility is needed: at the tongue and around the top of the shank. The Mojito lacks a truly wide all-round protective edge. Only the nose is covered with rubber. The eyelets are holes in the leather, but behind the leather is a plastic reinforcement. The hooks on the shank are made of metal. The sole construction is stiffer than you would expect. The bending point is nicely under the forefoot. The Salix sole comes from Vibram. It is not replaceable.
Putting on
The shoe has got a low shank, and you’d expect an easy entry. But this is not quite so. The tongue only opens to a limited extent, so you really need to push your foot through the opening. Also because I miss a pulling loop on the shank of the shoe. The laces run fairly smoothly through the eyelets. Because it is a mid-high shoe, you cant independently control the tension of the lace on the foot and the shank. The round laces usually stay nicely in place. The tongue has no loop to prevent sinking obliquely.
Scarpa Mojito Hike GTX Practice
The Scarpa Mojito Hike GTX are shoes with a hermaphroditic character. They are ‘low’ and therefore light which makes them very easy and comfortable to walk. Because of this appearance, you expect that you can’t make long mountain walks with them. But…. The sole construction is sturdy enough to take a 40-litre backpack and walk a multi-day hike in the middle of the mountains. Just one thing: you have to stand secure on your legs; the low flexible shank hardly supports the ankles. The sole itself offers mountains of grip on wet and dry. The coarse profile also makes sure that stones don’t get stuck in it and mud is easy to walk out. Under the toes, the sole has nice ridges that ensure that climbing runs smoothly. The heel lacks a bit of a brake for descending. The water-repellent leather ensures that the shoes remain light in wet conditions. The Gore-Tex lining in the shoe is waterproof and breathes well in not too hot weather. The wading height is only 9 cm.
Verdict
The Scarpa Mojito Hike GTX is on the border from A to B. The low and smooth shank is clearly A while the sole construction is indeed B. This makes it a real shoe for experienced hikers who want a solid base, but can have a smoother and lighter shoe. For inexperienced hikers it is a nice shoe for walking the dog or nice walks in the low mountains. The water-repellent suede leather keeps the shoes light in wet conditions. The nose protection does its job. Too bad is the somewhat tight entry in combination with a missing pulling loop. The sole offers good grip and the shoe is resoleable. The Mojito Hike GTX costs € 169.95 and that is very friendly. I rate the Scarpa Mojito Hike GTX at 8.0 points out of 10.
