The North Face (TNF) introduces a new ThermoBall jacket made from recycled materials. With this TNF is taking an important step towards large-scale sustainability.
ThermoBall
Perhaps I should refresh your memory for ThermoBall. The North Face introduced their new synthetic insulation material ThermoBall in 2013 and that raised quite a bit of attention. These small, round, synthetic fiber clusters retain heat in small air pockets. TNF claims that those clusters have the same properties as down, but also have the advantages of synthetic insulation materials.
Insulates even wet
Like down, ThermoBall is lightweight, warm and compressible. And after compressing, it fully returns to the original volume and therefore retains its insulation. But because it is a synthetic fiber, ThermoBall is just as weather-resistant as other synthetic insulation materials. In addition, it also retains its insulating properties when wet. According to TNF, independent tests from Kansas State University prove that ThermoBall offers as much warmth as a jacket with 600 cuin goose down. Point taken.
Primaloft
Also according to TNF, the new The North Face ThermoBall Eco offers the same performance but with an important difference: it is made from recycled polyester and recycled insulation material. The recycled insulation material comes from Primaloft and is spun from plastic bottles from the landfill. And since The North Face is one of the largest outdoor sports brands in the world, even a small change that is good for the environment has a huge impact. And ThermoBall is one of their big success stories, so the Eco version certainly has a positive influence.
Sustainability tour
It is not the first time that TNF has taken the sustainability tour. The North Face started with the use of recycled fibers back in 1996 with, their Denali jackets. And earlier this year the Bottle Source collection was launched, made of plastic bottles from National Parks.
Availability
The The North Face ThermoBall Eco jacket is available in six different colors and both as a hoodie and a full-zip version. The North Face ThermoBall Eco jacket proves that sustainable production does not necessarily have to be more expensive because the price is the same as the old one. In short: the same jacket, but now with a smaller footprint.
