Fit
The fit of the Scarpa Mojito Trail GTX is one for the narrow to normal feet. The ladies version is the Scarpa Mojito Trial GTX WMN and is made on a special ladies last, whereby the heel fixation in particular fits better with the narrower women’s heel.
Construction
The suede leather from which the upper of the Scarpa Mojito Trail GTX is made is a solid 18 mm thick. It is also water-repellent. The Mojito does not have much synthetic material; only on the inside of the ankles and the inset of the tongue. The toe and heel are fitted with wide rubber pieces for the much-needed protection. The ergonomical shaped insole has perforations in the fore-foot for moisture control.
Most of the eyelets are holes punched out of the leather, only the top three pairs of eyelets are made of metal. For a hiking shoe, the sole construction is fairly stiff, making it suitable for somewhat more difficult technical trails. The sole has its flex point nicely under the forefoot. A Gore-Tex lining makes the shoes waterproof. The Vibram Salix sole is resoleable.
Tight entry
To put the shoes on it is necessary to loosen the laces properly, otherwise the entry is a little tight. The back of the shoe has an excellent pull tab and that helps putting them on. At the bottom, the laces slide a bit more stiffly through the eyelets, while at the top it goes very smoothly. Once laced, the thick round laces stay in place. They don’t tend to loosen themselves. The eyelets are placed slightly asymmetrically so that the tension is nicely distributed over the instep. Although the tongue has no loop to prevent sagging, the tongue remains nicely in place though.
Practice
The Scarpa Mojito Trail GTX may be a low hiking shoe for light hikes, but in practice they prove more capable. The sole construction and the leather upper are sturdy and make them suitable for more difficult paths where a backpack for a hut-to-hut tour is no problem.
Due to the round shape of the sole and the rounded heel, the Mojito Trail GTX walks comfortably. The cushioning is a bit harder than average in this type of shoe. The padding of the ankles and tongue is nice and soft. Praise deserves the seam where the Gore-Tex lining merges into the padding around the ankles: it is not tangible. The rubber on the toe and at the heel offers super protection.
The shoes are not real high-flyers by weight, but still much lighter than mid or high mountain boots that can do the same type of hikes. I am very pleased with the outsole. It offers a lot of grip on loose surfaces and stones hardly get stuck in it. Mud is also well drained from the sole. The heel of the sole has a modest brake, so you have to pay a little attention when descending over loose stones not to slip. The Gore-Tex lining turns out to be waterproof in practice and the shoes breathe well. The wading height is about 60 mm.
Verdict
The Scarpa Mojito Trail GTX is a hiking shoe that is capable of more technical trails in terms of strength and build quality. The entry is a bit narrow, but the good pull loop helps here. The leather upper is sturdy. The sole construction makes the shoe also suitable for trips with a not too heavy backpack. The protection of the toe and heel is excellent. The outsole offers a lot of grip and a modest brake for descending. The shoe is extremely comfortable to wear. The damping is a bit on the hard side. Plus is the water-repellent suede leather that keeps the shoes light in wet conditions. The Gore-Tex lining is waterproof. The Scarpa Mojito Trail GTX costs € 169.95 and that is without doubt a decent price. I rate the Scarpa Mojito Trail GTX at 9.0 point out of 10 total.
