Materials
The Haglöfs Skarn Hybrid Jacket is a thin softshell that is suitable for activities where good protection against the elements is important, but you still want a breathable jacket to dissipate sweat. I love the fabric is very stretchy with a lot of freedom of movement as a result. The outside material is made of a mix of 85% polyamide and 15% elastane. The inside material has a bit less elastane: 90% polyamide and 10% elastane. You can wash the Skarn Hybrid Jacket at 40 °C on a normal program. After washing let it dry and finish with ironing or put it in the dryer to regenerate the DWR-coating.
Comfort
The Haglöfs Skarn Hybrid Jacket has a sporty fit that is nicely contoured. The fabric is comfortable on the skin. Extra vulnerable parts are extra strong. The sleeves are nice and long and the cuffs close fairly well. The back is longer than the front, so the lower back remains nicely protected when stooping. At the bottom the jacket has a good drawstring all around. The weight of just over 400 grams is simply neat. The Skarn Hybrid Jacket can also be folded compactly. Handy in your backpack or bicycle panniers.
Zippergarage
It is a pity that the front zipper cannot be opened from below, but the flap behind the zipper prevents drafts and that dust can creep between the zippers. At the chin the zipper is in a garage. The pull-tabs on the zipper are a bit short for cold hands and gloves.
Pockets
This jacket has 2 side pockets on the belly and 1 pocket on the left chest. The pockets are well placed so that they are still functional even with a backpack or a climbing belt. A large smartphone fits in the chest pocket.
The pockets are well placed in combination with a backpack. A large smartphone fits in the chest pocket.
Hood
The hood is large and thanks to two drawstrings on the outside just below the chin, it is easy to adjust. The reinforced cap also does its job well. A helmet can be worn under or over the hood. When turning the head, the hood just doesn’t turn nicely with it.
Waterproof and breathable
The DWR- water-repellent layer on the outside protects well against short rain showers. Big pro is that the DWR layer stays in tact after 3 washings and is also PFC-free. The jacket is well windproof and yet super breathable.
Sustainability
Haglöfs does not use recycled materials in the Skarn Hybrid Jacket, but it is Bluesign certified. A big plus is that the DWR coating is free from PFCs. Haglöfs is a member of the Fair Wear Foundation and EOCA but has no Rank-a-Brand score.
Verdict
The Haglöfs Skarn Hybrid Jacket is very comfortable to wear due to its preformed fit and the stretch fabric. It is also soft on the skin. The pockets are well placed in combination with a backpack or climbing harness. Nice is the hood that is easy to adjust and the cap works. The jacket is windproof, super breathable and can withstand a small shower. Big pro is the DWR layer that stays in tact after washing and is also PFC-free. The jacket has a nice weight and is small to pack. Not for colder days because of the thin fabric. The price of € 189,00/£160,00 is great for such a jacket. I rate the Haglöfs Skarn Hybrid Jacket at 9.5 points out of 10 total.
