Fit
The fit of the Mammut Saentis Low GTX is suitable for narrow to normal feet. They are a bit smaller than usual; try one size bigger. In the front, the shoes have a slightly narrower fit than average. The ladies version is built on a ladies last that is slightly narrower at the heel.
Construction
Main reason that the Mammut Saentis Low GTX is so light weight is because it is made entirely of synthetic materials. The upper consists of a combination of dense synthetic panels and mesh around the ankles and a knit around the forefoot. The Michelin Trail Cleat sole has a decent protective edge all around which protects the shoe well, especially at the heel and toe.

The symmetrically placed eyelets are partly punched holes in the synthetic material, partly nylon loops and metal eyelets at the top. The sole flexes nicely under the forefoot and the construction is quite sturdy for such a lightweight shoe. You can’t resole the Saentis Low GTX.
Mammut is not the manufacturer that puts the Gore-Tex logo big on their shoes, but the shoes that we test are definitely equipped with this breathable and waterproof membrane. So, pay attention in the store: there is also a non-Gore-Tex version.

Putting on
The Mammut Saentis Low GTX has a tongue construction that can open wide, so the foot can slide in easily. The pull tab on the back of the heel also helps. The laces – flat instead of round – slide smoothly through the eyelets. Once laced, the laces don’t tend to loosen themselves. The laces are on the very long side, so they tend to dangle. An extra loop fixes this.

Practice
Fully synthetic shoes and therefore low weight and you notice that when walking; they feel like lightweight running shoes. The heel is nicely rounded, which is good for a comfortable landing. The sole has a fine banana-shape at the front: this ensures a fine rolling movement.
The cushioning at the heel is very decent, but at the forefoot they are pretty firm. The ergonomically shaped removable foam insole cannot prevent this. The insole is perforated at the front, so that some sweat can be carried away here. The Mammut Saentis Low GTX is nicely padded around the ankles. The tongue is padded thinly, but because of the flat laces you do not feel it pushing through the tongue. Heel fixation is good.

The rubber protection of the toes and the heel proves fine in practice. The way Mammut uses the breathable and waterproof Gore-Tex in his shoes deserves praise. The open structure of the mesh and knit makes the shoes and Gore-Tex very breathable. The shoes are waterproof and the wading height is 65mm.

We are also pleased with the Michelin Trail Cleat sole. It offers good grip on dry surfaces and excels in wet conditions. Downside is the lack of a heel with a real brake when descending. You can feel stones through the sole, but due to the large distance between the ‘lugs’ they never stay in it. You can also easily walk mud out of the sole.

Verdict
The Mammut Saentis Low GTX are very light shoes that walk like lightweight running shoes. The sole construction is sturdy enough for a hiking shoe. Thanks to its banana shape, it also walks easily. The cushioning is good at the heel, a bit hard at the front. The entry is good, and the flat laces do not work themselves loose. However, they are on the long side.
The combination of knit, mesh and the limited amount of dense synthetic material, makes it a great breathable shoe for warmer wet days. The Gore-Tex membrane is waterproof. The sole offers a lot of grip on dry and especially wet surfaces. The all-round protection is good. We miss a brake at the heel when descending and that the shoe can be resoled. The price of € 149.00 is competitive and therefore I rate the Mammut Saentis Low GTX at 7.8 points out of 10 total.
